Its church is 15th century, with an ancient cross. It has many battlements, pinnacles and gargoyles. In the year 1001 the village is said to have been burned down by Danish invaders.
The decorative iron and glass canopies above the platforms were replaced by concrete beams and glass panels in 1961 but the glass has since been replaced by Perspex.[3] Goods traffic was withdrawn on 17 May 1965.
Work soon started on a new station. A goods yard was opened on 10 June 1912 on the landward side of the line, and the new station, now 440 yards (400 m) nearer to Starcross, was opened to passengers on 23 September 1912. The platforms were now 600 feet (180 m) long. The building on the 'Down' platform (nearest the beach) was destroyed by fire on 9 January 1924.
There is also a private preparatory school in Sidmouth, St John's School,[18] which takes children from 2 ? 13 years old including many overseas boarders. In 2007, the school was taken over by International Education Systems (IES).[19]
Exmouth railway station is the terminus of the Avocet Line to Exeter St Davids station. The Exmouth to Starcross Ferry is a passenger ferry that operates during the summer months across the Exe Estuary to Starcross, where the pumping station for Brunel's Atmospheric Railway can be seen.
