It is a National Trust property and is served by a public footpath. Concealed within it is "The Priory Oyster" - an oyster bar attached to the Priory Bay Hotel and open only in the height of summer. It has significant recent archaeology with the remains of a sea wall and rusted iron railings. Numerous hand axes have been found in strata dated from 400,000 years ago, which would indicate their users were Neanderthals. The woods overlook Priory Bay and its private beach.Alverstoke'Alverstoke' is a corruption of the name Alwara, a former Lady of the Manor, and Stoke, a settlement on the area of Alverstoke known as the Marsh Ground.[2] Alverstoke is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Alwarestock.[3]Fort GilkickerFort Gilkicker is a Royal Commission fort situated at the eastern end of Stokes Bay, Gosport, Hampshire to dominate the key anchorage of Spithead. Built between 1863 and 1871 as a semi-circular arc with 22 casemates, to be armed with 5 12" guns, 17 10" guns and 5 9" guns. The actual installed armament rather differed from this.
