In late July 2007, South Somerset District Council plans were made public by the Western Gazette to build a 21m 'Yeovil Sports Zone' on Yeovil Recreation Ground,[19] which has been a popular open green space used by the local community for over seventy years. Residents fought to protect the Rec,[20] leading to rejection of the proposals in 2009,[21] and further consultations in 2010.[22]

Ham Hill, Somerset

The northern end of the plateau is crowned by a war memorial to the dead of the nearby village of Stoke-sub-Hamdon killed during the two World Wars. It was designed in 1920 and unveiled in 1923 with four steps which lead to a square plinth and a tapering four-sided obelisk with a flat top.[21][22] The memorial is clearly visible from the surrounding countryside, including the A303 trunk road which now follows the course of the Fosse Way near the base of the hill. Just below the Monument is a bench dedicated to the memory of local student Alan Kneebone, murdered while at Wakefield College in 2001.[23]

Montacute House

Montacute House, situated in the South Somerset village of Montacute, is described by its owners, the National Trust, as "one of the glories of late Elizabethan architecture".[3] It has been designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building,[4] and Scheduled Ancient Monument.[5] It was visited by 111,070 people in 2007.[6]

Stoke Abbott

Stoke Abbott is a village in west Dorset, England, two miles west of Beaminster. The village has a population of 209 (As of 2001[update]), 14.5% of dwellings are second homes[citation needed]

Waddon Hill

The fort was built by the Second Legion under Vespasian, during their conquest of the Durotriges and occupation of Dorset. It is possible that the fort originated as a temporary camp during the campaign against nearby Pilsdon Pen, where two Roman ballista bolts have been found.
