Places of interest in Ossett, WF11
The place name "Burton Salmon" is formed of two elements. The first originates in Old English and translates as "farmstead of the Britons" (Brettas, genitive Bretta) plus the word tūn, meaning "farmstead, village, settlement". The second element, "Salmon" is a manorial affix, derived from the name Salamone, that of a man who held lands in the area in the 13th century. Although not mentioned in the Domesday Book, the village was recorded as Brettona circa 1160, before the name of the estate holder was appended, and again as Burton Salamon in 1516.[3]
Brotherton is a village and civil parish in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 672. The village is on the border with the City of Wakefield and West Yorkshire (here formed by the River Aire). Brotherton was on the A1 road two miles north of Knottingley, before the road was relocated. It is now on the A162, north of Ferrybridge, south of Fairburn. Brotherton is often mistaken as being located in West Yorkshire; it is a North Yorkshire village.
Recent Projects include rebuilding the former Pinxton signal box at the site.[1][2]
A large number of residents signed up to have their heating and electricity supplied by landfill gas powered CHP[1]. However, due to a lack of council support the scheme did not go ahead[2].
Comedian Sandy Powell was born in Rotherham and the town has produced several other entertainers who started on the Working men's club circuit, such as Duggie Brown, brother of Coronation Street actress Lynne Perrie. Christopher Wolstenholme of Muse and Dean Andrews, star of Life On Mars. The artist Margaret Clarkson was born in Rotherham[22] on 18 May 1941. Rob McVeigh, a contestant on the BBC's 2007 show Any Dream Will Dohails from Rotherham.
