The hamlet of Glenachulish (pronounced Glen - ah - choolish) lies in Gleann a' Chaolais, the glen that runs down to the narrows. This is the subject of the beautiful Gaelic song, Gleann Bhaile Chaoil written by John Cameron (1865?1951)[2] and known locally both as the Paisley Bard and by his local nickname Iain Cealaidh. He is often confused with another local bard also called John Cameron, known locally as Iain Rob (1822?1898).[3] Gleann a'Chaolais is ringed by Beinn a'Bheithir (pronounced Ben Vair), a massif which contains two munros - Sgorr Dhearg and Sgorr Dhonuill. In recent years a number of new houses have been built locally along with holiday chalets and an art gallery. In recent years, the fields of Gleann a'Chaolias have been turned into a 9-hole golf course.
Well known residents include Hamish McInnes inventor/constructor of the McInnes Stretcher, widely used by mountain rescue teams; and Jimmy Saville TV pesonality and a former Chieftain of the Lochaber Highland Games has a house in Glen Coe itself.
Eilean Munde is a small island in Loch Leven, close to Ballachulish. It is the site of a chapel built by St. Fintan Mundus (also known as Saint Fintan Munnu), who travelled here from Iona in the 7th Century. The church was burnt in 1495 and rebuilt in the 16th Century. The last service in the church was held in July, 1653.[1] The island is the site of a graveyard once used by the Stewarts of Ballaculish, the MacDonalds of Glencoe and the Camerons of Callart. The clans shared the island and the maintenance of the graveyard, even when there was conflict between them.[2]
The settlement is now served by Bellshill railway station.
Dull is a village located in the county of Perth & Kinross in Scotland. Situated in the Highland part of the county, Dull consists of a single street of houses on the north side of the valley of the River Tay. The place-name means 'meadow' or 'haugh' in Gaelic[1]. The parish church, unused since the 1970s[citation needed], is on the site of an early Christian monastery founded by St Adomnán, Abbot of Iona (died 704). Several early Christian cross-slabs dating to the 7th or 8th century have been discovered in and around the parish graveyard. A slab carved with stylised warriors and horsemen in the Pictish style, uncovered during grave-digging in the 19th century, is displayed in the Museum of Scotland.
