Places of interest in Juniper Green, EH14
It is currently served, Monday to Saturday, by one First ScotRail service each hour from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh Waverley. One train a day from Edinburgh terminates at Motherwell. There is a limited Sunday service at this station to Edinburgh and West Calder.
There is no accepted derivation of the name Currie but it is possibly from the Scottish Gaelic word curagh/curragh, a wet or boggy plain, or from the Brythonic word curi, a dell or hollow. The neighbouring suburb of Balerno derives its name from Scottish Gaelic, while the nearby Pentland Hills derive their name from Brythonic, so either is possible.
Another project to provide new signs at the boundary of Juniper Green and Baberton Mains, has received support in principle from the Edinburgh City Council. A suggested design for the signs can be viewed at the JGVA website where comments about the proposal can be logged.
The stained glass, by Douglas Strachan, was installed in 1922 and illustrates St Andrew, St Columba, St Margaret, St Ninian and William Wallace. In 1929 further work was carried out to bring the chapel back into use, and the restored and refurnished chapel was dedicated on 16 March 1934.
The tower was rediscovered in 1912, and excavations below the Half Moon Battery revealed the extent of the surviving buildings. Several rooms are accessible to the public, although the lower (ground floor) elements are generally closed. Outside the tower, but within the battery, is a three-story room, where large portions of the exterior wall of the tower are still visible, showing shattered masonry caused by the bombardment of 1573.[94] Beside the tower, a section of the former curtain wall was discovered, with a gun loop which overlooked the High Street. A recess was made in the outer battery wall to reveal this gun loop. Also in 1912?1913, the adjacent Fore Well was cleared and surveyed, and was found to be 33.5 metres (110 ft) deep, and mostly hewn through the rock below the castle.[94]
