The horror movie The Wicker Man was filmed almost entirely on location around Newton Stewart and had its premiere at its cinema in 1972. The artist and musician Bill Drummond of the KLF and K Foundation grew up in the town.
Shotts is a small rural town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located almost halfway between Glasgow (21 miles) and Edinburgh (29 miles). As of the 2001 census, the population was 8,235. It was reputedly named after the legendary giant Bertram de Shotts.Shotts was known for its mining. In the 1960s there were 22 coal mines in Shotts, but all are now closed. Shotts is the home of the former world champion pipe band, the House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band.Shotts has a high security, long term prison which is located between Dykehead and the neighbouring village of Salsburgh.
The Eaglesham lands, including the Polnoon estate,[96] were sold in 1842 after 700 years of ownership by the Montgomeries. The failure of the Glasgow Bank in 1878 lead to financial difficulties, which together with the poor state of the castle, resulted in the sale of the entire contents of the house between 1 and 5 December 1925. Subsequently the house was un-roofed and the windows removed so that tax and rates were no longer payable; they amounted to £1000 per annum.[97][98] The Montgomerie family had moved to Skelmorlie Castle by December 1925.
The school was taken over by a school board in 1872 as a result of the Education Act and a new building was erected. It opened on 27 December 1901. After fees for secondary pupils wee abolished in 1927, the school roll rose and it became necessary to build an annexe on Kilwinning Road, on the academy's sports field, in 1932. The school's primary department was closed in 1952.
