Places of interest in Pulborough, RH20
Cootham's population numbers around 200 and there is one public house named The Crown, parts of which date from 1555. As a well known coaching inn 'The Crown' had its own stables. They were situated on the south side of the road opposite the pub and were converted, some years ago, into houses that are known today as Crown Cottages.
July 2008 marked the band's centenary.
The village has always struggled in terms of leisure facilities, but has the Southwater Leisure Centre on Pevensey Road. The village boasts football, cricket, tennis, badminton, bowls, baseball and netball teams, who all compete at either a local or countywide level. Some of these teams are operated from Southwater Sports Club, located up Church Lane, opposite the church. For the more adventurous, the country park is able to offer facilities for sailing and canoeing, and in addition kids can be entertained at the adventure playground. For those interested in cycling and walking, the country park and new village centre both have direct access to the Downs Link footpath/cycleway.
William De Braose constructed the castle c1070,[1] along with the Norman church, on a natural mound and most of the surviving masonry dates from this time. Except for a period of confiscation during the reign of King John, Bramber Castle remained in the ownership of the De Braose family until the line died out in 1324. During Norman times the coastline would have been much further inland, and at high tide the water would have reached the castle walls.
Upper Beeding is on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park which was created in 2010. The South Downs Way and Monarch's Way long-distance footpaths run through the parish; the area is popular with walkers, cyclists and equestrians. The village boasts two pubs: The Rising Sun, The Kings Head. A third pub,The Bridge Inn, closed down in 2009.
