Places of interest in Huddersfield, HD1
Turnbridge is the area to the east of Huddersfield town centre ring road in West Yorkshire, England. It forms a corridor along which passes St Andrews Road, (B6432), and the Huddersfield Broad Canal to Aspley, where the Broad Canal meets Huddersfield Narrow Canal in the Aspley Basin. There are places for a limited number of narrowboat moorings. Some have electric and fresh water services.
Following the split of 1895 Huddersfield became a focus for rugby league and is currently represented by the Huddersfield Giants in the Super League competition, and by Huddersfield Underbank Rangers in National League 3. The Huddersfield Giants (under their original name of Huddersfield Rugby League Club) have won the Rugby Football League Championship seven times, most recently in 1961?62, and the Challenge Cup six times, the last success being in 1952?53.
As part of the enrichment program, pupils must undertake one week of PaWS (Projects and Work Shadowing) in the lower-sixth. Work shadowing placements include medical, political, scientific and language-based jobs, usually at a senior level within the respective companies. If a pupil does not wish to do work shadowing, many projects, from circus skills to mathematical art, are available.
It was originally a chapelry in the civil parish of Almondbury, and became a separate civil parish in 1866. It became an urban district in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894. The parish and urban district was abolished under a County Review Order in 1938, being split between the county borough of Huddersfield, the Holmfirth Urban District, and the Meltham urban district.
A quarter of a mile up the hill from Birstal on Leeds Road, there was once a Roman Watch Tower. This observation point was built on the Ridge or "Brae" of the hill. One side over-looked the Birstall area the other looked downwards from Howden Clough and the Valley towards upland Morley. This Watchtower was known in the early 20th century to the local inhabitants as the Brass Castle, a corruption of Brae Castle. It followed the line of other such structures build in West Yorkshire, a-top prominent projectory ridges.
